Crimson Sand

Again we were helpless against the meat, so we went to Jack’s party, only for the meat. Ralph and Piggy joined us later, but they were welcomed by Jack with an eerie authority. Ralph and Jack got into another argument. Jack was about to become chief for his new tribe and evidently it was stronger. Ralph fought to regain his power, but it was useless. The boys had become savage and now hid behind those masks.

Eric and I were once again speechless; there is nothing that could have gotten between them. We were going to pick Ralph, but the fierce savages stood with authority. Suddenly Jack ordered them to do their chant and dance. The overpowering urge to join them was irresistible, soon enough we were dancing with them in their circle. Piggy and Ralph stood outside the ring and watched. As the violent chant took place, something crawled out of the forest and our first reaction was to think that it was the dreaded beast. The masked hunters flung themselves at the creature, not having time to notice that the poor creature wasn’t the beast, it was Simon.

We were completely unable to break through the huddle that enclosed around Simon and we were left to watch mortified the morbid scene. Simon struggled but the hunters wouldn’t let him break free, the only sound was the tearing and clawing coming from the fight. Then rain poured from the skies and washed over the still corpse, it washed over the crimson sand as everyone to find cover from the rain.
