At the assembly, when the beast comes to be a topic of conversation, Ralph and Jack try to keep the littluns calm; they can’t afford to have them screaming around the scar. Jack assures that if there is any beast he’ll kill it. Still when we looked at the eyes of the big ones we saw the unmasked fear. I felt it too, the doubt, what if there was something.
Jack, us, and the other boys from the choir are hunters now. He’s determined to kill a pig, he couldn’t kill one the first time, but he says that the next time it won’t get away. No one dares to contradict him…
Ralph started to complain about no one helping him build the shelters. At first everyone helped, but then everyone started to drift away from work. He’s the one who said we were to have fun, and it’s true we didn’t help and it was something we all felt guilty about. Simon was the only one to stick with Ralph, he’s always helpful. When I was walking with Eric we saw him give the littluns the best pieces of fruits they couldn’t reach from the trees. It was something we would never think about doing and we accepted it, but Simon is different because he's from a pure nature.
